Hi Ruth,
I don't believe being an only child makes you more of a reader, I think it has more to do with where you draw your energy from such introvert or extrovert. My niece is an only child (age 13) and she has read maybe two books in her lifetime. I had three siblings yet I had read hundreds of books by the time I was thirteen.
I like that you like Sci fi reading. I like the differences in us all. I'm all over the place when it comes to reading. I enjoy Science Fiction, Romance, Thriller, Mystery, Gothic Romance or even children's books.
I'm feeling a bit melancholy myself but it's because I have to face one of my fears this week and it will be a challenge. If you don't mind I'll include you in my prayers tonight. You are such an interesting wonderful person.
Love Frances
ETA: I love the old Roman and Greek myths also _________________ "It isn't that I don't like you, Susan, because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there haven't been any quiet moments! Bringing Up Baby-Cary Grant |

(((Frances))) I wish you strength and good luck with your challenge, I'm sure you will do just fine! I'm humbled and honoured that you think kindly of me, and I will hold you in my prayers too. I hope that you had a great weekend, and did the Easter bunny bring you lots of goodies? I still feel FULL, LOL!

Me too Frances. My mother would always say , "her nose is always in a book". Through necessity, I learned how to read and watch tv at the same time.
And....I love the Greek and Roman Myths! Did you watch those movies on Sunday aftenoons when you were young? _________________ No matter where you go, there you are. |

I have followed this thread since ked started it. I thought, how can I possibly list my favorite books? I guess I will just throw some out there. I have always read but slowed down after I quit smoking (too much of a connection).....I have been quit over a year now and reading is picking up again.
When I was young it was Nancy Drew, My Friend Flicka, anything Jules Verne and Jack London. Oh Anne of Green Gables has to be at the top too.
When my children were growing up.....The Chronicles of Narnia and all of Susan Cooper's books and of course Laura Igells Wilder.
Books as an adult.....the list would be sooooooo long.
Here are a few:
All of Bess Streeter Aldrich's books, all of Ken Haruf's books, Watership Down by Richard Adams, Willa Cather's books/short stories, A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, all of Nicholas Spark's books, all of Max Lucado's books.
There are so many more.....I am currently collecting the classics.
Have any of you ever used www.librarything.com? You should give it a try if you haven't. You can list up to 200 books for free or unlimited for a token price. Neat place. _________________ In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on...Robert Frost

I have an "old" childhood few:
Cherry Aims - Nurse
Bobbsie Twins -
Sherlock Holmes
those ring a bell?
As a Grandmother I have had my granddaughters read the American Girl Doll books. Once they have read all six in the series, they can get the doll that the books are about. That with going down to the AGD store is a great reading experience and history experience. |

Only Carson McCullers! lol
Everybody should do as Cliofan does! She is a very wise lady. Anyone who wants to read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, please do! Also anyone who doesn't want to... please do!
I just know that if you are a Will and Janelle person, you will like it. I remember posting about it back in the TVCH days, and leosmom I believe looked up a description... I wish I could find it now because it reminded me of the W/J story too, lol.
I mean, OPRAH likes this book! Where can you go wrong? I am going to start a book club thread in here soon, and THIALH will be the very first book.
Here's Oprah's site about it:
http://www.oprah.com/obc_classic/featbook/thlh/obc_featbook_thlh_main.jhtml
I think that it was actually a really unique choice for Oprah. Her books are usually more plot driven I think. This is a slow book in terms of plot, but the characters are so intense, and the emotions are so true to life.
READ IT READ IT READ IT

I read it. I just finished it last night. I can only say that reading this book was something that I will never regret and I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Thank you Ked! _________________ "It isn't that I don't like you, Susan, because after all, in moments of quiet, I'm strangely drawn toward you; but, well, there haven't been any quiet moments! Bringing Up Baby-Cary Grant |

The book is avail at our library so I'll prob start this weekend. How long will you two give me to read it? I'm a fast reader so if it is really good shouldn't take long depending on the length. |

Checked on Audible.com and the book there (audio version - unabridged) is a 12 hr book. That is for someone to read out loud. But it should give you an idea of how long it might take you to read it.
90 minutes in the car back and forth to work, I probably could listen to it in 8 days. |

OK, I'm guessing I can do it in about a week. Depending on how much good tv is on in the evening.
JWChitown-sorry bout your commute. Commuting sux. I had to drive to Portland in rush hour once last week and thought I might lose my mind. |
