Jamie Dugan, a Spartanburg High School graduate, is ready to outwit, outplay and outlast her 15 fellow contestants on the reality series Survivor: China and hopefully win $1 million.
Dugan, a 22-year-old University of South Carolina student, is one of 16 new castaways on the 15th installment of Survivor, CBS announced Monday. The series debuts at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 on CBS affiliate News Channel 7.
Dugan, who was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and moved to Spartanburg when she was 14, played varsity softball for Spartanburg High and was the editor of photography for the school yearbook. She is a senior in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at USC and will start classes Thursday. She is majoring in public relations with a minor in business.
Dugan's parents, Julie and Sean, and sister, Jenna Evon, will be rooting for her every Thursday night. Jamie is not allowed to speak to the media until she is off the show. She also has kept her family in the dark about the show's outcome.
'She's a very athletic person - a lot of people wouldn't know by looking at her,' Julie Dugan said. 'She's played baseball since she was young. She's a good swimmer. She works out at the gym. She's well prepared to handle any situation that comes her way.'
The family said Jamie trained for the show by exercising at a local gym, running every day, watching videos of past Survivor episodes and working with someone on her diet.
'She wanted to make sure she was in top shape and wanted to gain a lot of muscle strength,' Julie Dugan said. 'She wanted to do this for the challenge. She's a strong-willed person. She loves working with people, and she's very smart. I think she will have good strategies.'
Serious training: Jenna Evon, a 19-year-old pre-chiropractic major at USC Upstate, said her sister trained for about five months. 'Although we don't know how she did, she was in very good shape when she went,' she said. 'She likes the outdoors. We grew up in Florida, so she was always at the beach swimming. She's very outgoing and is one of those people who brightens up the room when she enters it. She definitely would have no problems making friends with everybody. She's also a lot tougher than people perceive.'
Friend Joshua Ford, a 24-year-old student at USC Upstate, also thinks Jamie will go far in the game.
'She's the hottest Survivor chick in 15 seasons,' he said. 'She has a smile that goes on for days.'
